This is a video follow-up to my last post about S3 Backups on Media Temple's (gs)

This is a video follow-up to my last post about S3 Backups on Media Temple’s (gs). The response I’ve received to that entry has been really, really positive and I’m thrilled that people are finding the tutorial and the script useful.

In the comments of that entry, Patrick was running into some problems — it seemed like maybe he had missed a step. It occurred to me that it might be really beneficial to have the entire process documented in a screencast, because some people do better with a visual guide, and for anyone unfamiliar with their command line, seeing what you are supposed to do can be really, really helpful.

So I whipped up a video tutorial on Thursday. I wanted to have it posted earlier, but I wanted to stream it as a QuickTime file (for optimum quality/performance) and I had to tweak the settings of the QTSS server I’m using and then figure out the best way to embed the content. I was out all day yesterday and I didn’t really get a chance to look seriously at embed options until this morning. The solution I ended up using is Shadowbox, a JavaScript AJAXy media player.

You need QuickTime or VLC or something to view the file. If you need it in another format, I can try to acquiesce

For the demo, I’m assuming you are using my
backup_server.sh script, but the steps are the same even if you are using your own.

Small Player

Medium Player

Super Huge Player

Enjoy! If you have any more questions, just leave them here and I’ll try my best to answer them.

Apologies to David and Ben for any sexual harassment -- what can I say, I'm human!

This was one of my favorite interviews from SXSWi — and not because of the eye-candy (well, not explicitly), but because the site/service that Ben and David have started is so innovative, intelligent and important. I’ve never been overtly ecologically conscious. I recycle, I try to save water/energy, I saw An Inconvenient Truth in the theater — twice — but I’m not a green loving evangelist. Talking with those two guys and hearing their rational and realistic spiel about the state of Earth and what real people can do to reduce our carbon footprint was not only enlightening — but inspiring.

Here are two guys that are my age (actually, I think they are younger) who are truly doing something to get the message out and make sustainability more than just a buzzword. Go to MakeMeSustainable.com and consider signing up for your own profile (you can even link it with your Facebook or OpenID account). It’s really easy to fill out your basic carbon profile and then pledge (or commit to things you already do) to reduce the amount of carbon you emit each year. Via Twitter, Steve Lawson (@solobasssteve) told me about a similar site based in the UK, A Year of Living Generously.

I’m not going to lie, these guys absolutely made me blush. Movie star handsome AND smart. Yeah, I totally, totally love my job. Apologies to David and Ben for any sexual harassment — what can I say, I’m human!

Make Me Sustainable from Download Squad on Vimeo.

Two other interviews that I really, really enjoyed (and haven’t already posted) were the adorable Chris Saad from DataPortability.org (see it here) and the always dynamic Gary Vaynerchuk from WinelibraryTV (see it here).

And while I’m in SXSWi recap mode — I didn’t get to interview Sunir and Saul from Freshbooks.com (I was running the camera — hence you can blame me for the bounciness — hey, a director is NOT a DP (unless you are Soderbergh…)!!) but meeting them and hearing their story was great. That’s a company I want to do business with. And interviewing Kevin Marks from Google OpenSocial was a true honor — and a great way to end what ended up being one of the best weeks of my life.

Out!

So, upon hearing the news that the truly kickass Veronica is leaving Mahalo Daily,Grant and I jokingly started plotting.

The net result? Jasonstealmycohost.com OK, I’ll admit it’s pretty badass (I was asleep with a migraine when all the actual creation and tweeting about the scheme took place). It was all in good fun, and a total joke — until Calacanis pulled his whole, Mahalo Daily Idol thing. And you KNOW how much I love American Idol.

So, we’ve decided to go one step further (I might not be a New Media Douchebag, but I’m a New Media Diva, to be sure) and this afternoon, we made this:

Yeah. I’m officially here to play. Bring it bitches!

And go to Jasonstealmycohost.com and leave a comment there (or here) if you want to join Team Christina (or really, Team film_girl!

I know I'm not even fake Internet famous (trust me, I KNOW), but that won't stop me from pimping the interviews I did last week.

SXSWi! OK, I’ll be writing a much more thorough round-up of the whole thing later on — but I’m still playing catch up. Yeah, yeah, I got home two days ago. Lots to catch up on! I have a post almost finished with shout outs and thank yous to all the cool people I met, and that should be up tomorrow.

One of the many great things about Twitter is that you get so used to someone’s avatar, you can call out to them in a crowd, even at something like SXSWi. Several people recognized me by name just because of Twitter, which has the result of making you feel both a weird (in a totally awesome way) and pseudo-famous. The “I’m a somebody” vibe only increases because so many people are doing video interviews and podcasts.

Please understand, I know I’m not even fake Internet famous (trust me, I KNOW), but that won’t stop me from pimping the interviews I did last week.

In an effort to not totally kill your feed reader with flash files,

Loren Feldman 1938Media.com

OK, Loren has been one of my favorite web video guys for a LONG, LONG time. Being interviewed by him, meeting him in person (sorry his lady was sick, it would have been great to meet her) and hanging out at the Gawker party was just a blast. Loren would be the man even if he hadn’t interviewed Grant and I for his site.

Aaron “Technosailor” Brazell Technosailor.com

Aaron is such a great guy! He’s been a favorite Twitterati for quite some time and I love all the stuff he does on his site and with b5Media. It was such a blast hanging out with Aaron and his crew. Plus, you gotta love a guy who yells “Beacon sucks!” during the Facebook keynote.

Styledash Geek Chic Profile

Yeah, I won’t lie. This is pretty insane. Geek Chic is going global baby!

And Styledash also has this utterly awesome Guide to Geek Chic at SXSW

And no Media Whoredom post would be complete without linking to my interview with Guy Kawasaki of Alltop.com and Truemors — more interviews will be up in the coming days on DownloadSquad (our hotel wifi was teh suck).

This is pretty cool, we talked to Alex King from Crowd Favorite about WordPress and discuss a few of the best plugins for pimping out your WordPress install. Yes, I just typed, “pimping out” — no, I could not be more white if I tried.

Because we were limited to 5 plugin choices (and we even fudged that a little bit), I wasn’t able to include all of my favorite plugins. A few more, in addition to what we mention in the video:

I’m a HUGE fan of Mint, but I like being able to use Google Analytics to track traffic too — it’s not real time like Mint, but it can still be handy. As such, I’ve found Joost de Valk’s Google Analytics for WordPress plugin a must-have.

In a similar vein, it’s annoying to have to re-generate a sitemap from my host ever few days, so I use the great Google XML Sitemap generator

WordPress DB Backup is really, really nice. It’s not that I can’t manually back-up my MySQL database myself, but the fact that once a week a backup is e-mailed to me is not only convenient, but very helpful. For instance, when I was trying to figure out some weirdness on my blog last week, it was great to have a copy of the database from Sunday (before the weirdness started) to compare files. Plus, if I don’t have to think about backing up, all the better.

I don’t have it installed right now because I need to work on displaying the markup in my sidebar first, but Alex King’s Twitter Tools is far and away my favorite Twitter WordPress option. Because my theme doesn’t natively use widgets (it works better if I just create my own), getting some of the Twitter plugins to work was kind of difficult and didn’t leave me with a lot of options for styling — Alex’s tool not only does that, but you can even Tweet from your blog (I disabled that, but it’s a cool feature). Plus it does that great, tweet when you post a new blog post thing. Love that.

What are your favorite WordPress plugins? Maybe we can do a follow-up show, Pimp your WordPress 2: Electric Bugaloo

The production, maybe not. Jason Calacanis was nice enough to talk to us about Mahalo and social search in general.

I majorly fucked up right off the bat by failing to record our iChat audio conversation (the next day I found out that there is a plugin that will ensure that you do that, but the built in version only allows you to record if you have both people on camera. Not audio, not one sided video. For that, you have to get another program. Sometimes I hate Apple.), so we had to do it again in Skype (thank you Jason for being so awesome and nice about it!). It was incredibly embarrassing and not the way I wanted to make my best first-impression, but what can you do?

Grant wasn’t feeling well and so our coverage was a little off. I think the screencast for the interview worked, I would have liked to have tried to get it a little clearer. That will take time though. All in all, really good content, not great production quality. Oh well. Everyone has an off week.
